Environmental Management

NLMK DanSteel A/S wants to protect the environment in the best possible way and works therefore with implementing of an environmental management system which can be certified according to ISO 14001.
Environmental management according to the EMAS system was earlier good practice at Danish Steel Works Ltd. until the bankruptcy in 2002.
NLMK DanSteel A/S has adopted an environment policy, which are the principles and purposes describing

  • what we wish to achieve in the environmental area
  • within what areas have we decided to improve ourselves.

You can find the Environment Policy here

You can find the Climate Strategy here

NLMK DanSteel A/S has set up different environmental goals, forming the company’s demands to itself, for instance, the least possible emission of heavy metals into waste water per tonne produced steel plates.

As an environmental conscious production company, NLMK DanSteel A/S wants to minimize the impact on the environment through development and improvement of the production techniques.
This is done to secure that the operation of the plate mill can comply with our own environmental demands of limiting the impact on the surrounding environment, through minimization of noise pollution and harmful emissions into the air, water, and soil.

NLMK DanSteel A/S also aspires to other environmental goals, such as to achieve the biggest possible recycling of waste products and to diminish as much as possible all noise-related complaints.

NLMK DanSteel A/S is one of the steel industry’s large producers, located in a smaller provincial town. We therefore work hard to limit the environmental impact on our surroundings and we make an effort to maintain a good contact to our neighbours in Frederiksværk through information about our activities.

NLMK DanSteel A/S wants to preserve an environmental management system which can be certified. The system shall be available to all employees at NLMK DanSteel A/S and shall ensure

  • that NLMK DanSteel A/S works in accordance with the adopted environmental policy
  • that all relevant employees are involved in the company's environmental work and that an environmental conscious behaviour is established in order to secure that NLMK DanSteel A/S gets most possible effect of the effort within the environmental area
  • that all existing environmental demands and approval conditions are observed
  • that there will be openness about all questions in relation to environment.
Green Accounts
NLMK DanSteel A/S has for the years 2003, 2004, and 2005 prepared green accounts and sent them to the Danish Commerce and Companies Agency. The green accounts, which show the consumption of raw materials and emissions of materials and waste products etc., will in future be placed on our webpage.

Environmental Approval
NLMK DanSteel A/S has to renew its environmental approval from 21 September 1999. The approval was taken over from Det Danske Stålvalseværk A/S during the purchase in 2002 and the legal protection of 8 years expires in 2007.

At the beginning of August 2006, the application with updated information about production and operation has been sent to the County of Frederiksborg, which will carry out the approval work in 2006.

All noise sources at NLMK DanSteel A/S have undergone thorough measuring and calculation. Furthermore, a technical/economical investigation describing the noise reduction methods and costs has been conducted.

All emissions into air have been registered and measured as well as OML calculations have been conducted. Impact of waste water has been reviewed and revised and the drain system has also undergone examination.

The new environmental approval, which is expected at the end of 2006, will be a compilation of the earlier approvals as well as the completed projects and revamps at the plant. This - together with the forwarded proposal - will provide a better overview of the existing conditions and control requirements.
